To Commission or Not to Commission
The Pros and Reasoning for a Fine Arts Commission
Typically, Artana clients choose to commission an artwork if they are seeking to capture someone, something or someplace near and dear to their hearts. Most common commission requests include portraits of people, pets or prized possessions such as one’s sailboat at sea, or a still life highlighting a treasured collectable. Commissions have included specific places, such as a vacation homes, a family estate (usually recently purchased or soon to be sold), or places traveled. Commissions can also capture someone’s emotional or psychological state. This type of commission is typically achieved through a non-representational technique employing either an abstract approach or a collage of representational and abstract imagery. Artana artists cover the full range of subjects and painting styles (from pure Abstract to breathtaking Realism) and most of our artists happily accept commissions.
Sometimes a commission is another “version” of an existing original artwork. A common request is to commission an artist to create a “Take-II” on a painting that has sold to another party, or to create another version but in a different format (size) or palette (colors) to fit a particular environment. Commission work also arises when a client wishes an artist to re-create an existing masterwork. In this case an artist “duplicates” a masterpiece, however, the intent of the client and the artist is always to pay homage to the master artist and his or her ingenuity.
Commissions are also helpful in a private or corporate situation when due to sheer desire or décor purposes, a piece needs to activate a certain space, depict a specific subject or theme, have a complimenting palette to its predetermined space, and be available in a finite amount of time and within budget. Remember, it is always great luck to find exactly what you are looking for...already created, available and affordable to you . . . by serendipity! However, sometimes people wait a lifetime for the “right” painting and this can be very frustrating. When “the moon and the stars” simply aren’t aligning for you regardless of your efforts and resources in seeking out the perfect piece, a commissioned artwork is in order.
Art, like most retail goods, can actually be custom ordered. But before embarking upon a commission, it is imperative to have a seasoned Artist Representative who specializes in Fine Arts commissions working on your behalf. Most people do not realize that brokering a commission through Artana will result in the exact same cost as attempting to do it on one’s own, but the added value is free and phenomenal. Artana appreciates the opportunity to interview commission inquirers and we will confidently recommend an artist within our stable (or perhaps one of our affiliate artists) to best suit the project at hand. We are also in a position to head off any shortcomings by making our client aware of areas that their favorite artist might not be well suited for what they have in mind and thereby guiding them in a better direction.
Embarking upon a commission should be a wonderful, fulfilling experience. Commissioned artwork generally starts with a client desiring to have a certain piece (at a set price, with defined contractual terms and with a guaranteed completion date). On that note, it is important for the client to select a trustworthy and experienced third-party arts professional ready to take on the task from beginning to end. Artana encourages its followers and clients to investigate their options and then choose the right arts professional to help with this complex, artistic endeavor. Believe it or not, we feel a client’s ability to hire a reputable source is as important as the actual commission! After all, a commissioner is literally creating “something out of nothing”. It is an intricate journey from mind to canvas. A fine arts commission is not for beginners and luck is useful when playing the lottery! We know our clients want to love their commission. Artana enjoys making their clients privy to the process, and then helps them navigate each stage of the way in order to deliver, to our trusted client, the commission he or she had in mind.
Artana credits its numerous commission successes to our understanding and expertise in the Arts, clear communications and fair terms for both client and artist. Artana provides both its client and its artist with a contract at the onset of the commission. While most professionals will agree that a winning contract is absolutely the cornerstone to a successful commission- we also only broker a commission on the premise that it is comprised of three parties (Artana, Client and Artist) who genuinely want to make the venture a success by doing whatever is necessary to accomplish this. We make it our duty to pair our client with an artist who not only has the sublime artistic talent to nail our client’s vision, but will also be available, prepared, excited and as invested in the engagement as is our client. It is to our client’s advantage to work with a pair of professionals who understand each other’s language developed through years of working together. Equally proven is our ability to understand our client’s needs and language. Artana is proud to get you in touch with our commission clients who will eagerly speak to you about their positive experience, and the dynamic success of their commission.
