ARTIST STATEMENT
“Her paintings are an expression of character, one that embraces joy and the optimistic expectation that the world is an interesting place,”
wrote Katherine French, Director of the Danforth Museum of Art, in the exhibition catalog for Nan’s Solo show Interiors in 2007.
“Animated. Energetic. Vibrant. Imaginative. And these words describe just the artist. Throw in colorful, joyful, funky, whimsical, and exuberant and you have a partial description of Nan Hass Feldman’s evocative paintings as well.” Leon Nigrosh, The Worcester Phoenix.
Nan Hass Feldman, well known for her work as a painter and mixed-media artist has focused on scenes of Interiors as well as Landscapes as subjects to explore her love of color, detail, and design while interpreting her experiences. Feldman’s paintings, overflowing with luscious, color-laden content project a vivacity and enthusiasm for life that she brings to everyday surroundings. No matter which medium she uses…oil paints, oil sticks, acrylics, encaustics, collage, or mixed-mediums, her “dazzling array of color and style are recognizable and unique” said Mr. Nigrosh.
With over 48 one-person exhibits, 25 museum exhibits, and scores of group exhibits to her credit, Feldman’s work is in public and private collections throughout the United States and in France, Spain, England, Japan, and Canada. Some of the public institutions that have commissioned works are at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, Mass General, Boston Children’s, Brigham and Womens, Fidelity Investments, Meditech, Veryfine Products, and many more.
Feldman's awards include two Frances A. Kinnicutt traveling fellowships from the Worcester Art Museum to paint in Oaxaca, Mexico, and in the Dordogne Region in France; the Basil H. Alkazzi National Acquisition Award; the Liquitex Fine Art Achievement Award; and a Massachusetts Arts and Humanities Foundation Commission from the Museum Without Walls.
Feldman's artistic achievements and teachings in the fine arts have placed this highly talented, energetic artist in features in Boston Globe Magazine, Boston Globe’s Living Arts, FM: Fidelity Magazine, TV Channel 4 News and Evening Magazine
Feldman has taught for over 40 years at three museums in Massachusetts, at Framingham State University, and, since 1999, she has also been leading painting retreats in France, Greece, Italy, and Mexico, and, recently, in the Mediterranean, Baltic, Caribbean, South Seas, and South America for Oceania Cruises.
