ARTANA

Framing Your Art with Everything In Mind

Location: ARTANA
Speaker: Heather Roy, Gallery Director, ARTANA

Framing can't make a painting but it can certainly ruin one! The most successful framing solution is one when the art is not visually separated from its frame. In other words, the two live harmoniously together and without a divide. This is the "art" of framing: to unite two separate (but equally important) entities to become one.

In order to accomplish this possible but hair-splitting task called custom framing, one usually resorts to the expertise of a framer. But how do you really know if the frame shop you've chosen is up to par? As with any purchase, it is best to educate yourself on the product before becoming engaged in the decision making process. This lecture will cover both the aesthetic and conservation decisions made in framing artwork properly. Its focus on the "ins-and-outs" of framing will prevent you from electing a poor framing choice in the future, or this new knowledge will give you the confidence to reframe a work whose frame is preventing you from enjoying your art.

Artana's Director Heather Roy will walk you through her signature checklist of factors she considers when framing fine art. Roy's visual examples will highlight successful frame projects her clients entrusted to her, from contemporary to classic. In the end you will subscribe to the belief that a perfect framing solution must enhance as well as protect your art. Otherwise, why spend the money?

FOR NEW COLLECTORS:

Are you interested in learning how fine art is priced? Can you easily identify and differentiate between fine art mediums? Can you imagine yourself collecting art for soul-fulfillment, investment, decor, and as a hobby? Wouldn't you love to know the 15 most common mistakes made in buying art before committing one yourself! Artana addresses a myriad of questions, concerns and facts about collecting art with a visual "show-and-tell" presentation. This information and truisms are not found in textbooks or courses, but derived from experience.

The lecture "Collecting Art & Being Smart" is presented by Heather Roy, Gallery Director of Artana.
In March 2005, Roy was asked by the Institute of Contemporary Art to give a condensed version of her theory at a ICA event titled "New Art for the New Collector". As a panelist, Roy filled the gallery seat and addressed ICA members on how to begin collecting art.
