LECTURES
FOR NEW COLLECTORS
Are you interested in learning how fine art is priced?
Are you able to easily identify and differentiate between fine art mediums?
Can you imagine yourself collecting art as an interest, investment, and décor ?
Would you be interested in knowing the 15 most common mistakes people make when buying art before making the same mistake? Artana addresses a myriad of questions, concerns and facts about collecting art with a visual "show-and-tell" presentation. This information and truisms are not found in textbooks or courses, but derived from years of experience. The lecture "Collecting Art & Being Smart" is presented by Heather Roy, Gallery Director of Artana.
In March 2005, Ms. Roy was asked by the Institute of Contemporary Art Boston to give a condensed version of her theory at a ICA event titled "New Art for the New Collector". As a panelist, Ms. Roy filled the gallery seat and addressed ICA members on how to begin collecting art. She also presents to women’s clubs, Rotarians, private companies, public libraries and art organizations.
If you are interested in attending a lecture at the gallery, or hosting one at your organization or business, please contact the gallery.
(The lecture is 1.5 to 2 hours long.)

TO COMMISSION OR NOT TO COMMISSION
- THE PROS AND REASONING FOR A FINE ARTS COMMISSION
Surprise Your Special Someone With Personal Art, Give the Gift of WOW!
Typically, Artana clients choose to commission an artwork if they are seeking to capture someone, something or someplace near and dear to their hearts. Most common commission requests include portraits of people, pets or prized possessions such as one’s sailboat at sea, or a still life highlighting a treasured collectable. Commissions have included specific places, such as a vacation home, a family estate (usually recently purchased or soon to be sold), or places traveled. Commissions can also capture someone’s emotional or psychological state. This type of commission is typically achieved through a non-representational technique employing either an abstract approach or a collage of representational and abstract imagery. Artana artists cover the full range of subjects and painting styles (from Abstract to Realism) and most of our artists accept commissions.
Sometimes a commission is another “version” of an existing original artwork by an artist we represent. A common request is to commission an artist to create a “Take-II” on a painting that has sold to another party, or to create another version but in a different format (size) or palette (colors) to fit a particular environment.
Commissions are also helpful in a private or corporate situation when due to sheer desire or décor purposes, a piece needs to activate a certain space, depict a specific subject or theme, have a complimenting palette to its predetermined space, and be available in a finite amount of time and within budget. Remember, it is always great luck to find exactly what you are looking for...already created, available and affordable to you . . . by serendipity! However, sometimes people wait a lifetime for the “right” painting and this can be very frustrating. When “the moon and the stars” simply aren’t aligning for you regardless of your efforts and resources in seeking out the perfect piece, a commissioned artwork is in order.
Art, like most retail goods, can be custom ordered. But before embarking upon a commission, it is imperative to have a seasoned Artist Representative who specializes in Fine Art commissions working on your behalf. Most people do not realize that brokering a commission through Artana will result in the exact same cost as attempting to do it on one’s own, but the added value is free and phenomenal. Artana appreciates the opportunity to interview commission inquirers and we will confidently recommend an artist within our stable (or perhaps one of our affiliate artists) to best suit the project at hand. We are also in a position to head off any shortcomings by making our client aware of areas that their favorite artist might not be well suited for what they have in mind and thereby guiding them in the right direction.
A commission should be a wonderful, fulfilling experience. Commissioned artwork generally starts with a client desiring to have a certain piece (at a set price, with defined contractual terms and with a guaranteed completion date). On that note, it is important for the client to select a trustworthy and experienced third-party arts professional ready to take on the task from beginning to end. Artana encourages its followers and clients to investigate their options and then choose the right arts professional to help with this complex, artistic endeavor. We feel a client’s ability to hire a reputable source is as important as the actual commission! After all, a commissioner is literally creating “something out of nothing”. It is an intricate journey from mind to canvas. A fine arts commission is not for beginners and its success shouldn't be left to chance. We know our clients want to love their commission. Artana enjoys making their clients privy to the process, and then helps them navigate each stage of the way in order to deliver, to our trusted client, the commission he or she had in mind.
Artana credits its numerous commission successes to our understanding and expertise in the Arts, clear communications and fair terms for both client and artist. Artana provides both its client and its artist with a contract at the onset of the commission. While most professionals will agree that a winning contract is absolutely the cornerstone to a successful commission- we also only broker a commission on the premise that it is comprised of three parties (Artana, Client and Artist) who genuinely want to make the venture a success by doing whatever is necessary to accomplish this. We make it our duty to pair our client with an artist who not only has the sublime artistic talent to achieve our client’s vision, but will also be available, prepared, excited and as invested in the engagement as is our client. It is to our client’s advantage to work with a pair of professionals who understand each other’s language developed through years of working together. Equally proven is our ability to understand our client’s needs and direction. Artana will provide you with names and contact numbers of previous commission clients who will eagerly speak to you about their positive experience, and the success of their commission.
If you’ve always thought about commissioning an artwork, or if you’ve never considered it until today, we'd like to hear what you have in mind. Commission consultations are always complimentary. Large or small, graphite or full color, please remember that most commissions take at least 2 months from start to completion.

FRAMING YOUR ART WITH EVERYTHING IN MIND
Speaker: Heather Roy, Gallery Director, ARTANA
Framing can't make a painting but it can certainly ruin one! The most successful framing solution is one when the art is not visually separated from its frame. In other words, the two live harmoniously together and without a divide. This is the "art" of framing: to unite two separate entities to become one.
In order to accomplish this possible but hair-splitting task called custom framing, one usually resorts to the expertise of a framer. But how do you really know if the frame shop you've chosen is up to par? As with any purchase, it is best to educate yourself on the product before becoming engaged in the decision making process. This lecture will cover both the aesthetic and conservation decisions made in framing artwork properly. Its focus on the "ins-and-outs" of framing will prevent you from electing a poor framing choice in the future, or this new knowledge will give you the confidence to reframe a work whose frame is preventing you from enjoying your art.
Artana's Director Heather Roy will walk you through her signature checklist of factors she considers when framing fine art. Roy's visual examples will highlight successful frame projects her clients entrusted to her, from contemporary to classic. In the end you will subscribe to the belief that a perfect framing solution must enhance as well as protect your art. Otherwise, why spend the money?
