Building a Collection of
Contemporary Art
|

The ICA's New Group presents two
special events for those interested in buying
contemporary art. A panel discussion with artists, a
collector, a curator, and gallery director, and a lecture with
Matthew Carey-Williams of Sotheby's demystify the process
of collecting today's best art. |

New Art for the New
Collector
Tuesday, March 22, 6:30 pm
|
![]() |
Focusing on
first-time art buyers and collectors on a budget,
this panel discussion offers practical advice for
those who wish to start buying contemporary art or
add to an existing collection. Panelists will
address topics of particular interest to the
novice collector, such as avoiding intimidation in
a gallery or an open studio; what questions to ask
a gallery director, artist, or curator; budget
considerations; and how and where to buy pieces
within a budget. A cocktail reception will
follow.
The panelists include:
Deborah Barlow is an
artist who lives in Brookline. Over the last 25
years, her work has been exhibited in the U.S. and
Europe with recent shows at Portland State
University in Oregon, Anam Cara in Ireland, and
the Lyman Eyer Gallery in Massachusetts.
Bennett Simpson is the
Associate Curator at the ICA. Before joining the
ICA staff in 2004, Simpson served as Associate
Curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art,
University of Pennsylvania. He is also a widely
published critic whose writing on art and music
has appeared in Artforum,
Frieze, Texte zur Kunst, and
Purple.
Heather
Roy is the owner of Artana Gallery in
Brookline's Coolidge Corner. Artana's mission is
to promote and publicize leading contemporary
artists and educate the public on the "art" of art
collecting. Roy hosts monthly exhibitions and
offers a selection of collectable work created by
accomplished New England artists.
Jonathan Seelig
co-founded Akamai Technologies and served as an
executive-in-residence at Polaris Ventures. A
collector since 2000, Seelig has focused on
contemporary minimalism, photography, and
contemporary drawings. Seelig is a Trustee of the
Institute of Contemporary Art, where he serves on
the Exhibitions, Education, and Marketing
committees.
Brett Wallace
is an artist currently represented by the Julie
Heller Gallery in Provincetown, Massachusetts. His
work has been shown in solo and group shows
throughout Boston and Provincetown over the last
five years. Wallace has built a public and private
collector base, including firms such as Citizens
Bank and Suffolk University School of Law, as well
as private collectors in the United States and
Caribbean Islands.
The panel discussion
and reception is $20 general admission and free
for ICA New Group members. For more information,
