OPENING RECEPTION WITH THE ARTIST: Saturday, March 8, 6-8 pm

Show Duration: March 4 - 29, 2008

Artana welcomes abstract painter Robin Remick and her new series of oil paintings on aluminum to the gallery. The artist's work is inspired by incomplete memories of places, feelings experienced, or fragments of time. Instinctively, the viewer senses a common thread in the series: the passage of time and the pull of gravity. Artana invites you to the debut of these impressive large works by an exciting contemporary artist, formerly of Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Remick earned her Master of Fine Arts degree (’05) from Eastern Michigan University. Since 2000, the artist has to her credit over two dozen Midwest exhibitions. The new body of work at Artana was created between 2005-2007. We hope you will join us in welcoming this exciting talent to the gallery on Opening Night!

Advance viewings are welcomed (virtual or on-premise). Please call the gallery at 617-879.3111 for an appointment.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My work begins by focusing on incomplete memories of places I have been,  feelings I have experienced, or fragments of time. It takes form through intuitive decision making and elements of chance, balanced by conscious mark making.

Surface texture, paired with merging flat and reflective qualities, combine to draw the viewer in, while large colliding forms make up the composition to enjoy from a distance. I often pair a hard edge with organic form to add definition and lead the viewer through my paintings. I have a sense of place in mind while I am working, although along the way it disseminates into a hint of a past impression.

Recently I have addressed my recollections of found spaces I frequented in my youth. These places that fueled my imagination I came upon by chance. An iced-over pond glimmered like diamonds or the tall field grasses were awakened by a breeze. Fragments pulled from my elusive memories and reconfigured into a new space provide endless twists on my self-portraits. My interest in manipulation of materials in my paintings could be a result of the necessary resourcefulness of creativity.

Passage of time is evident in the weathered appearance and awareness of gravity I apply to my paintings. Although my work is heavily considered I like to present it with a certain amount of levity, or randomness, combined with elements of intention.
